First General Meeting for 2009

Postby cww516 » Sun Aug 23, 2009 6:20 pm

MEETING UPDATE!

The first general meeting will be in 314 Altgeld Hall at 7:00 pm on Thursday, Aug. 27. Room 314 is the large lecture hall on the top floor, just go up until you run out of stairs and head towards the center of the building.

Sometime hopefully this week we'll be having the first meeting of the year. We'll be going over the different stuff we do in a little more detail than we were able to on Quad Day, including both recreational and tournament play, and for anyone who hasn't played before, we'll go over the basics of the game so you get a feel for what to expect. If you're not sure if you still want to come, don't forget we'll have free pizza. Check back here later in the week or wait for the email for more detailed information about the meeting. There will be a followup post and email for anyone who is interested, but can't make it to the meeting. Details for our recreational games will also be posted here and sent out in an email.

In the mean time, feel free to head into the forums and make friends with (or make fun of) each other.

If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email (cwweber2@uiuc.edu) or a private message through the forum, and I'll be happy to help.

For anyone who was unable to make the meeting but is still interested in playing, here's a general rundown of what we covered:

As far as recreational play, we are going to try to have two outings each semester. There is usually a big game at a field near Illinois State (Sudden Impact) sometime around the end of September or the beginning of October, and we plan to schedule our second outing around this. Hopefully, that should give everyone the opportunity to go to both if they want to. Typically, the rec games cost $25 to $30, which includes entry fees, all the rental equipment you need, 500 paintballs, and lunch, which is a great deal, considering entry and rentals alone would usually cost you that much, not to mention the cost of paint. As far as transportation, we all meet at the parking lot on the Northeast corner of Lincoln and Oregon, and carpool from there. If anyone has a car and is willing to drive, it's always greatly appreciated, and it's encouraged that you give your driver a little gas money, so don't worry too much about wasting the gas driving. We also have a completely optional membership fee of $5, which, in addition to helping the club out with expenses, will give you first dibs in case there's ever a shortage on ride space. You can sign up at any of our events, or contact me by email or on the forum.

On the tournament side, we typically practice every Sunday at Sudden Impact. If you're interested in coming out sometime, send a private message on our forums to user "dgallaher", and he can give you access to the part of the forum where we discuss tournament-related stuff. Entry and a case of paint for team practice is $50 (as of this spring, at least), field paint only. If you can make a case last more than one weekend, it's perfectly fine to bring it back, and you'll only have to pay $10 for entry. Usually, members of the tournament team have their own equipment, but if you don't have your gear with you at school, or just want to come out once or twice to see if you like it, most of us have more than one setup, and would be more than willing to lend some gear out. If you live in the dorms, you should be fine keeping most of your gear there, but it's probably a good idea to store your marker and such off-campus with one of the many team members who live in apartments or houses. We tend to play at least 4-5 tournaments a semester, and if you're interested, we can give you details as we find them out.

Just as a reminder, all information pertaining to our recreational games will be posted on the front page of this site. Further info can be found by clicking the Message Board link on the left side, which will take you to our forums. The news section contains everything you see on the front page, plus any comments or updates about each topic. As always, feel free to contact me through email (cwweber2@uiuc.edu) or via the forum with any questions you might have.
